Congenital Hydrocephalus

When there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain at birth, a condition known as congenital hydrocephalus develops. The pressure from the additional fluid on the baby’s brain can lead to brain damage and other health issues. This is an extremely unusual disorder. If the illness is diagnosed and treated early on, it can reduce the severity and duration of any potential complications.

Blockage of the cerebral aqueduct, the long, thin channel connecting the third and fourth ventricles or cavities of the brain, is the leading cause of congenital hydrocephalus. A blockage, infection, bleeding, tumor, or arachnoid cyst are all possible causes of this ailment.

Although prenatal testing for congenital hydrocephalus is available, the condition is often identified at or soon after birth. We take a complete medical history and do a physical examination of your kid before making a diagnosis. Imaging modalities including ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and pressure monitoring may all be a part of your child’s diagnostic workup.
