CSF Rhinorrhea Repair

Rhinorrhea caused by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is extremely rare but can have disastrous consequences for the sufferer. The release of CSF into the nasal cavity is caused by a breakdown in the barriers separating the sinonasal cavity from the anterior and middle cerebral fossae. When the dura and the skull base develop a fistula, a condition known as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhoea can develop. Common causes of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea or liquorrhoea include cerebral surgery, destructive lesions, or head trauma (fronto-basal skull fractures).

No direct therapies are recommended for CSF leaks in many situations. This is due to the fact that many CSF leaks caused by injury can mend with just rest and time. However, there are a variety of treatments and ways that can aid in the event that a CSF either won’t heal on its own or can’t be expected to. Usually, the leak may be repaired or sealed off such that it no longer causes any problems.
