Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea | Case Study – Dr Sambuddha Dhar

We recently treated a patient who had suffered trauma during an accident which led to CSF rhinorrhea. CSF rhinorrhea is a condition where the fluid surrounding the brain starts to leak through the nose and the sinuses. In general, the cause of this condition is not known, but induced trauma can cause the membrane surrounding the brain that holds this fluid to rupture.

The patient was also found to have cerebral fluid leakage from the nose. While in some minor cases, CSF leak can be self-healing but in severe cases such as this, there are significant risks associated with it. Therefore, in this case, I believed that surgery was the more prudent solution. Now, following a 5.5-hour surgery, the patient made a complete recovery from the condition and no CSF leakage was found on follow up.
